Baseball Recap: Union County Victorious

Union County came out on top against Monroe Central on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run first inning. The Patriots sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over the Golden Bears. The win continues a trend for the Patriots in their matchups with the Golden Bears: they've now won four in a row.

Ezra Hensley looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. He is becoming a predictor of Union County's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 5-2 (and 3-7 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Union County let Colton Johnson and Peyton Williams run wild. Johnson went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base, while Williams went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Johnson has become a key player for Union County: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Cam Salsbery, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Union County's victory bumped their record up to 8-9. As for Monroe Central, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season.

Union County will host Cambridge City Lincoln at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Monroe Central, they are taking a road trip to take on Tri at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
