Football Recap: Newberry Panthers vs. University Christian Christians
Newberry gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. Everything went their way against the University Christian Christians as the Newberry Panthers made off with a 44-20 win. This was payback for the Panthers, who suffered a 41-26 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Kaleb Woods was nothing short of spectacular: he rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries, and also picked up 30 receiving yards and a touchdown. His longest rush was for an impressive 58 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Collin Dunmore was another key player, throwing for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Newberry was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 253 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2023.
Newberry's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged five passes before it was all said and done. The picks came courtesy of La?Harry Debose and Hayden Moore. Debose also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making five total tackles and defending five passes in addition to snagging three interceptions. Jarquez Carter was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making six total tackles (4.0 for loss).
Although University Christian took the loss, they still got scores from Dwayne Stuckey, Trevon Burch, and Amare Mack.
Newberry will head out to square off against Hawthorne at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for University Christian, they will take on Hebron Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. University Christian is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
