Basketball Game Preview: St. Mary's Pirates vs. The Vanguard School Coursers

The St. Mary's Pirates will venture away from home to take on The Vanguard School Coursers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. St. Mary's is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 63 points per game this season.

St. Mary's is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Florence: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that St. Mary's blew Florence out of the water with an 83-43 final score. The Pirates pushed the score to 69-37 by the end of the third, a deficit the Huskies had no chance of recovering from.

St. Mary's relied on the efforts of Jeremiah Starr, who went 7 of 10 on his way to 23 points, and Kisean Dawson, who went 7 for 10 en route to 15 points in addition to seven rebounds and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Gunner Lyon, who went 5 for 8 on his way to 15 points.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: St. Mary's was working as a unit and finished the game with 25 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since the start of last season.

Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, The Vanguard School's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell to Lamar 62-57. While the Coursers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Thunder 21-14 in the first quarter.

The Vanguard School's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 9-4. As for St. Mary's, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-5.

St. Mary's might still be hurting after the 56-30 loss they got from The Vanguard School in their previous meeting back in February of 2024.
