Spanish Springs and Reed are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2022, but likely not for long. The Cougars will face off against the Raiders at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Spanish Springs is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Spanish Springs is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They came out on top against Douglas by a score of 7-3. That's two games straight that the Cougars have won by exactly four runs.
Lily Delamora spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Mackenzie Kirkendoll was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. Maddy Marshall was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Reed faced Bishop Manogue in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Raiders were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over the Miners. The result was nothing new for the Raiders, who have now won 18 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Reed also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Hayley Noble gave up only one earned run on four hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Krystyn Noble, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Kehaulani Tambaoan, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Reed was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in four consecutive contests.
Reed pushed their record up to 27-5-1 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Spanish Springs, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 13 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-10-1 record this season.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Spanish Springs hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .386. However, it's not like Reed struggles in that department as they've averaged .390. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Spanish Springs came up short against Reed when the teams last played on Saturday, falling 8-3. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
