Baseball Game Preview: Westerly Bulldogs vs. Stonington Bears

The Westerly Bulldogs will square off against the Stonington Bears at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Westerly's hitters haven't had much luck over their past four games, but Wednesday's contest will give them a chance to turn things around.

Westerly is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Bishop Hendricken, who was ranked first at the time (Westerly was ranked seventh). The Bulldogs came up short against the Hawks on Tuesday, falling 7-1.

Westerly saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jack Zerbarini, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Stonington unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 7-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of Woodstock Academy. The match marked the Bears' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Jace Wolfradt was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Stonington's loss dropped their record down to 18-5. As for Westerly, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-8.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Westerly has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Stonington struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Westerly came out on top in a nail-biter against Stonington when the teams last played back in March, sneaking past 8-7. Do the Bulldogs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Bears turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
