Basketball Recap: Sophia Schulze's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Hampton over High Plains

Hampton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their tenth straight loss. They received a blow as they fell 51-36 to the High Plains Storm. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Hawks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 49-33 on January 9th.

Hampton's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sophia Schulze, who posted 11 points and five blocks. Schulze has been hot for a while, having posted two or more blocks the last 17 times she's played. Gavin Gilmore was another key player, dropping a double-double on ten points and 12 boards.

High Plains' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Emma Brown, who went 6 for 14 en route to 14 points in addition to six rebounds and three blocks. Brown continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton Hofmann, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 10 points and seven assists.

Hampton's loss dropped their record down to 1-15. As for High Plains, the win was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-4.

Hampton will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Palmer at 6:00 p.m. on February 4th. High Plains has already played their next matchup (against Nebraska Lutheran), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
