Baseball Game Preview: Liberty Lancers vs. Pomeroy Pirates

The Liberty Lancers are taking a road trip to take on the Pomeroy Pirates at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Liberty lost 17-7 to St. Maries on Thursday. The defeat continues a trend for the Lancers in their meetings with the Lumberjacks: they've now lost five in a row.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Pomeroy). Everything went their way against Garfield-Palouse on Saturday as Pomeroy made off with a 10-3 victory. With that win, the Pirates brought their scoring average up to 6.5 runs per game.

Nolan Newberg was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was even better at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while going 4-for-4. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Cesar Morphin was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Gunner Magill also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Pomeroy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.

Liberty now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Pomeroy, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-3.

Liberty was able to grind out a solid win over Pomeroy when the teams last played back in March of 2024, winning 7-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for Liberty since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
