Football Recap: Martin County Has No Trouble Against Greene Central

The Martin County Gators got the win against the Greene Central Rams on Friday by a conclusive 38-14. The result was nothing new for the Gators, who have now won three matches by 24 points or more so far this season.

Martin County can attribute much of their success to Jordan Matthewson, who rushed for 73 yards and one touchdown. Matthewson also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up a sack and making six total tackles. Chris Bell was in the mix too, providing Martin County with two scores.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Martin County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 284 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 201 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

Another reason for the win was Martin County's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as five different players picked up one apiece. They received some extra help from Bell, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Martin County now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Greene Central, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.

After each having a week off, Martin County and First Flight will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. The Gators will be up against the Nighthawks' rather soft defense (which has allowed 32.2 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Greene Central, they will face off against Tarboro at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. The Vikings' defense has only allowed eight points per game this season, so the Rams' offense will have their work cut out for them.
