Southside is headed into Friday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Tuesday. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at the hands of McCollum. That's two games in a row now that the Cardinals have lost by just one run.
Achillies Sepulveda was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (zero). He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
Sepulveda wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Joey Ramirez, who scored a run while going 2-for-3. Ramirez also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
Meanwhile, Southwest earned a 4-1 victory over Jay on Wednesday. The Dragons haven't had any issues with the Mustangs recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Alex Rico tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March of 2024.
At the plate, David Samudio was excellent, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Romeo Castillo was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Southwest's victory bumped their record up to 12-4-1. As for Southside, their loss dropped their record down to 10-10.
Southwest's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Southside hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .341.
