Football Recap: Layton Takes a Loss

Layton fell victim to American Fork and their airtight defense on Friday. They were beaten by the Cavemen 38-0. While losing is never fun, the Lancers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Utah football rankings (they are ranked 50th, while the Cavemen are ranked third).

Even if they lost, Layton's defensive line still kept up the pressure with three sacks. Xander Williams was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself. He also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with six. Another thorn in American Fork's side was Kohl Helgesen, who picked up a sack and made 14 total tackles.

American Fork's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kapono Manuela led the charge by throwing for 307 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 72% of his passes. Those 307 passing yards gave Manuela a new career-high. Christian Hanshaw also helped out with an impressive 96 receiving yards.

This is the second loss in a row for Layton and nudges their season record down to 2-3. As for American Fork, the win keeps them at an undefeated 5-0.

Coming up, Layton will head out to challenge Syracuse at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Lancers' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for American Fork, they will welcome Davis at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cavemen's defense better be ready for this one: the Darts have averaged an impressive 48 points per game this season.
