Baseball Game Preview: Jones Eagles vs. Marian Catholic Spartans

The Jones Eagles will head out on the road to take on the Marian Catholic Spartans at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Jones will be strutting in after a win while Marian Catholic will be coming in after a defeat.

Having struggled with three losses in a row, Jones turned things around against Chicago Washington on Monday. They walked away with a 7-2 victory over the Patriots.

Gio Delgado looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. He is becoming a predictor of Jones' success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is 3-1 (and 4-5 when he doesn't).

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Renzo Sansonetti, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. Christophe DeWijkerslooth was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Jones kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Marian Catholic fell victim to Joliet Catholic and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They came up short against the Hilltoppers, falling 19-0. The contest marked the first time this season in which the Spartans were not able to get on the board.

Marian Catholic has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-7 record this season. As for Jones, they now have a winning record of 7-6.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Jones has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Marian Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.

Jones suffered a grim 9-2 defeat to Marian Catholic in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
