Mater Dei survives first round of Boras Classic southern regional

Monarchs overcome five-run deficit to defeat Hart.

Coming off a second-straight National High School Invitational championship, the Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) Monarchs were primed for a letdown as they began play in the Boras Classic southern regional Tuesday and Hart (Newhall, Calif.) was more than happy to take advantage.

The Indians scored five runs in the first three frames but were unable to put away the Monarchs, who came from behind to collect a 6-5 win. The victory is the 11th in a row for the Monarchs, who are 11-1 on the season.

Tyler Adkison came up with the big hits for the Monarchs as he had a two-run double in the third inning to close the gap to 5-3. He gave Mater Dei the lead in the fourth inning with another RBI double.

Action continues today with games at two sites. At JSerra Catholic High School, Vista Murrieta and Chaminade play at 9 a.m., Bishop Amat and El Camino Real meet at noon., Oaks Christian and El Toro meet at 3 p.m. and West Ranch and JSerra Catholic play at 6 p.m. At Mater Dei High School, Canyon plays Loyola at 9 a.m., Chatsworth takes on Hart at noon, Lakewood plays Great Oak at 3 p.m. and Mater Dei meets Santiago at 6 p.m.



El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.) 7, Chaminade (West Hills, Calif.) 1
El Toro scored five runs in the top of the seventh to put away Chaminade. Gavin Collins was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs for the Chargers. Phillip Steering also came up huge with a 4-for-4 effort that included two RBIs. Chasen Ford went the distance, allowing one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts in the win. Nick Kahle had a home run for Chaminade while Myles Hager was 2-for-3 with a double.

Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) 10, Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.) 3
The Lions bashed 14 hits, including three home runs, and scored seven runs in the third inning to get past Vista Murrieta. Harrison Hoff, Jack Kruger and Cole Taylor each had a home run with Hoff going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Nathaniel Palace also had three hits while Tyson Quolas and Kruger had two hits and two RBIs. Spencer Vogelbach went six innings to get the win, giving up three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

Great Oak (Temecula, Calif.) 2, Loyola (Los Angeles) 1
The Wolfpack scored two runs in the fifth to beat Loyola despite being outhit 7-4 by the Cubs. Orlando Meza's single scored both runs for Great Oak. Loyola had five doubles but was unable to capitalize. Brad Wegman gave up one run on seven hits with six strikeouts for the winners.

Santiago (Corona, Calif.) 4, Chatsworth (Calif.) 3
Santiago rallied for three runs in the sixth and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Darr singled with the bases loaded in the seventh to drive in the winning run. Trevor Millard had a double for Santiago's top hit of the game while Riley Conlan and Raul Camas each had a double for Chatsworth. Eric Jimenez went seven innings and struck out four for the win.

West Ranch (Valencia, Calif.) 4, Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) 1
The Wildcats scored all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Lancers. Jordan Benty drove in a run and also scored in the frame and finished 2-for-3 to lead the West Ranch offense. Cody Bennett got the win, giving up one run on four hits with six strikeouts. Scott Hurst was 2-for-3 with a double for Bishop Amat.

JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) 6, El Camino Real (Woodland Hills, Calif.) 0
The Lions got a shutout pitching effort from Quentin Longrie and Clay Chatham to defeat El Camino Real. Longrie went six innings and struck out four while giving up four hits. Chatham gave up a single hit and struck out one. Parker Joe Robinson had a home run for the Lions while Jake Pries was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.



Lakewood (Calif.) 2, Canyon (Anaheim, Calif.) 0
Andrew Mendoza went seven innings and struck out six to hand Canyon a rare loss. Jonathan Pasillas was 2-for-3 and drove in both runs with a two-run single in the third inning for Lakewood.
