Baseball Recap: Hobbs Takes Down Ranked Artesia

Hobbs faced Artesia in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Eagles were the clear victors by a 14-2 margin over the Bulldogs. With that win, the Eagles brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Allen Utajara tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits.

On the hitting side, Hobbs let Cole Kesner and John Curtis run wild. Kesner fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 2-for-4, while Curtis went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Kesner also scored two runs, which is notable because Hobbs is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-9 otherwise. Jayden Taylor was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Hobbs kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2025.

The victory made it two in a row for Hobbs and bumps their season record up to 8-9. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs over those games. As for Artesia, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-7 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Artesia beat Hobbs by a score of 15-6 later that day.
