Basketball Recap: Herrin Finds Playoff Glory Versus Mattoon

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Herrin walked away with it. They were the clear victor by a 63-38 margin over the Mattoon Greenwave on Wednesday. Given the Tigers' advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 89th, while the Greenwave are ranked 370th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Herrin got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Kyrese Lukens out in front who went 7-for-13 on his way to 17 points and six rebounds. Grady Cox was another key player, dropping a double-double with 13 points and 15 boards.

Herrin is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 24-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.0 points over those games. Mattoon's loss dropped their record down to 9-22.

Herrin has already played their next contest, a 61-43 defeat against Centralia on the 28th. Mattoon does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
