Baseball Recap: Chaparral Takes a Loss

Chaparral had lost four straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 11-8 to make it five. They fell 7-3 to the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles. The Wolverines were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Golden Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Tommy Humphrey was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one home run. Madden Kretzer also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

As for Mountain Vista, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games.

On Mountain Vista's side, Sawyer Tipton tossed a big game, tossing six innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits. Tipton has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Alex King, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Spike Magill, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

Chaparral and Mountain Vista should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings. The Wolverines will challenge ThunderRidge at 4:15 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (23 vs. 107). Meanwhile, Mountain Vista (ranked second) will meet Ponderosa (ranked 25th) at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
