The Breckinridge County Fighting Tigers will venture away from home to take on the Owensboro Catholic Aces at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Breckinridge County will be strutting in after a victory while Owensboro Catholic will be coming in after a defeat.
Breckinridge County took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They walked away with a 4-1 win over Owensboro.
Noah Spence looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Harper Lucas, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI. Leland Board was another key player, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Owensboro Catholic has relied on a stalwart pitchers averaging 3.45 runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Monday. They fell just short of Madisonville-North Hopkins by a score of 11-10. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Owensboro Catholic also got a good showing from Lane Hundley, who tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits.
At the plate, Brady Atwell was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Jake Murphy, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Breckinridge County has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Owensboro Catholic, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 17-12 record.
Breckinridge County couldn't quite finish off Owensboro Catholic in their previous matchup back in March and fell 4-2. Can the Fighting Tigers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
