Basketball Recap: Eli Ellis' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Kenston over Mayfield

Kenston lost against Mayfield back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Kenston Bombers took a 62-50 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mayfield Wildcats. The Bombers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Kenston's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Eli Ellis, who posted ten points in addition to six assists and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Braelyn Akins, who went 6 of 11 en route to 17 points.

Mayfield was led to victory by Angelo Newman and Izzy Austin. Newman went 7 for 14 on his way to 18 points and three steals, while Austin went 6 of 12 en route to 17 points and three steals. Newman has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last six times he's played. Manny Rogers was another key player, putting up five points and seven assists.

Kenston's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 6-10. As for Mayfield, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 4-9 record this season.

Kenston will challenge Chardon at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mayfield, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 60-42 loss against West Geauga on the 25th.
