Basketball Preview: Salt Lake Academy Griffins vs. American Heritage Patriots
Two dominant guards in Pedro Perez and Niwhai Winitana are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Salt Lake Academy Griffins will head out on the road to face off against the American Heritage Patriots at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Thursday, Salt Lake Academy's game was all tied up 21-21 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. They came out on top against Varsity Opponent by a score of 61-53. The win was just what Salt Lake Academy needed coming off of a 89-46 defeat in their prior match.
Salt Lake Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Perez led the charge by dropping a double-double on 25 points and 21 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucas Malmstrom, who scored 19 points.
Meanwhile, American Heritage unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Friday. They took a hard 75-61 fall against Judge Memorial Catholic. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for American Heritage in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now lost three in a row.
Salt Lake Academy is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-5 record this season. As for American Heritage, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-10.
Everything came up roses for Salt Lake Academy against the Patriots in their previous matchup back in November of 2021 as the team secured a 96-37 win. With Salt Lake Academy ahead 57-13 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
