Baseball Recap: Wagner Comes Up Short

Wagner had lost three straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 7-20 to make it four. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Alamo Heights Mules. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mules this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 21-8 on Tuesday.

Ryan Self was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Self wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Erick Martinez, who went 2-for-3 with one double.

As for Alamo Heights, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-17-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games.

On Alamo Heights' side, Yul Salaburu spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Hunt Conger, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

Wagner does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Alamo Heights, they will face off against Tivy at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Mules are facing the Antlers at the right time seeing as the Antlers are stuck on a four-game losing streak.
