League recap: Union Pines rises in state rank

3A Conference 12 recap October 1, 2013

Union Pines scaled the state rankings by moving to 296 from 336 this week, the biggest jump in 3A Conference 12. The Vikings were able to move up by besting Westover 13-6.

Southern Lee lost to Douglas Byrd 58-12 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Jerry Pullum was a force in the backfield as Lee County topped Grays Creek.

Pullum provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Yellow Jackets bested the Bears. Pullum's favorite target this week was John Nguyen, who caught 2 passes for 50 yards.

Derrick Fitts put up the best numbers in passing as the Wolverines lost to Union Pines. He had a total of 3 completions for 43 yards. Fitts' favorite target this week was Deonte Richardson, who caught 2 passes for 38 yards.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Cavaliers' Emond Caldwell and Aaron Blockmon have proven to be a lethal combination. Caldwell has thrown for 1,188 yards this season, while Blockmon, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 39 catches for 887 yards. Pullum from Lee County leads the league in rushing with 848 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Burton Cates' team takes on the Eagles. The Yellow Jackets are in first place, while Douglas Byrd is in third place.

There should be lots of points scored when Lee County and Russell Stone's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Yellow Jackets comes in having scored 211 this season, while the Eagles have scored 146. Lee County scored 36 points last week as it beat Grays Creek.
