Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Starts off Right with Win over North Tonawanda

St. Mary took care of business in their home opener on Thursday. They snuck past the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks with a 66-60 victory. This was payback for the Lancers, who suffered a 58-46 loss the last time these two teams met.

Leading St. Mary's to victory were James Engelbach-Schafer and Will Szablewski. Engelbach-Schafer posted 17 points in addition to six boards and three steals, while Szablewski almost dropped a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Engelbach-Schafer a new career-high in blocks (three). Another player making a difference was Israel Wilson, who put up 14 points.

St. Mary's smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in eight consecutive games dating back to last season.
