Basketball Recap: Moffat Comes Up Short

Moffat was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were dealt a 59-30 loss at the hands of the Creede Miners. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Cowboys have suffered against the Miners since February 24, 2021.

Despite the loss, Moffat saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Chase Shellabarger almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 12 rebounds. Shellabarger is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last six games he's played.

Even though they lost, Moffat smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.

Creede's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jaxson Fazio led the charge by dropping a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Fazio has scored at least a third of Creede's points. Charlie Fairchild was another key player, going 6 for 15 en route to 21 points along with seven steals and three blocks.

Moffat now has a losing record at 5-6. As for Creede, with the victory, they broke their four-game losing streak and moved their record to 5-9.

Moffat will venture away from home to face off against Sierra Grande at 6:30 p.m. on February 1st. Creede has already played their next matchup (against Sangre de Cristo), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
