Basketball Recap: Spring Creek Takes a Loss

After flying high against Dayton on Friday, Spring Creek came back down to earth. The Spring Creek Spartans lost to the Fernley Vaqueros at home by a 49-34 margin on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nevada basketball rankings (they are ranked 42nd, while the Vaqueros are ranked eighth).

Despite the loss, Spring Creek still got an impressive performance from Ashlynn Sorenson, who posted nine points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Spring Creek smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Taylor Tollestrup continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Fernley, dropping a triple-double on 24 points, ten boards, and 11 blocks. Tollestrup is crushing it when it comes to blocks: she's posted at least three every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Laura Rosales, who had five points along with seven rebounds and four steals.

Spring Creek has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season. As for Fernley, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 14-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Spring Creek will face off against Elko at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Fernley, they will take on Churchill County at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Fernley is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.7 points per game this season.
