Basketball Recap: Ashland Comes Up Short

Ashland was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They were outmatched by the Spearville Lancers and fell 80-16. The contest marked the Blue Jays' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Leading Spearville to victory were Ian Melendez and Danny Alcala. Melendez went 13-for-15 to rack up 32 points, while Alcala went 6-for-7 en route to 21 points along with five boards and four steals. Melendez has become a key player for Spearville: the team is 10-1 when he posts at least 20 points, but 4-5 otherwise. Josh Kolbeck was another key player, putting up five points in addition to seven assists and three steals.

Ashland's defeat dropped their record down to 5-11. As for Spearville, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season.

Ashland has already played their next matchup (against Minneola), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Spearville, they will be playing in front of their home fans against South Gray at 8:00 p.m. on February 21st.
