Baseball Recap: Wilmington Comes Up Short

Wilmington was the 9-1 winner over Laurel when they last played one another back in March of 2019, but their luck changed this time around. Wilmington fell just short of Laurel by a score of 4-3 on Saturday. The matchup marked the Greyhounds' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Kayden Wygant was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He didn't allow a single hit and allowed only one earned run over four innings pitched. Wygant was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Danny Leonard was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 4-for-4. Owen Bauer was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Even though they lost, Wilmington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in four consecutive games.

Wilmington's defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Laurel, the win got them back to even at 2-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wilmington will square off against West Middlesex at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Wilmington's pitchers better be ready for this one: West Middlesex has averaged an impressive 11.2 runs per game this season. As for Laurel, they will face off against Neshannock at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Neshannock will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Laurel surely won't give up without a fight.
