Maryland: North Takes Brooks Robinson All-Star Game

State's high school baseball stars take to Camden Yards; Lax standouts gear up for Under Armour tournament.

The 28th annual Brooks Robinson High School All-Star Game was played on Sunday afternoon at Orioles Park at Camden Yards immediately after the hometown team soundly defeated the Atlanta Braves in a MLB interleague game.

The all-star game, considered by many to be the top prep baseball game in Maryland, featured the state’s top high school seniors split into two squads – North and South.

The North team used a three-run fourth inning to take a commanding lead and held on for a 6-1 win over the South squad.

North pitchers Blake Geiger (Calvert Hall) and Josh Conway (Smithsburg) combined for four scoreless innings on the mound to allow RBI-triples by Brady Wilson (Frederick), Jordan Thurber (Clear Spring) and Blake Thompson (Cardinal Gibbons) to stand-up.

Chris Cook (DeMatha) slugged a home run into the standing-room-only deck in right field to account for the South’s only run, earning him the South’s MVP hitter award. Cook is heading to George Mason on a baseball scholarship.

The North’s MVP hitter award went to Justin Albright (Catoctin), who reached base in all three of his at-bats and scored each time.

Conway was named the recipient of the North MVP pitcher award after retiring all six batters he faced and finishing with three strikeouts. Brandon Crigger (Calvert) struck-out five while pitching two scoreless innings to earn the honor for the South.

“The Brooks Robinson All-Star Game is intended to promote high school baseball in Maryland,” said Bernie Walters, president of the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches, which oversees the organization of the game. “We have been able to showcase players to college and pro scouts. To play in Orioles Park at Camden Yards is the thrill of a lifetime. In the past some players have delayed signing pro contracts to play in the Brooks Robinson All-Star Game.”
