Basketball Recap: Wednesday's Loss Ends Cross' Winning Streak

If Cross was riding high fresh off their 59-18 takedown of Thomas Heyward Academy last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The contest between the Cross Stingrays and the John Paul II Golden Warrriors didn't end well, with the Cross Stingrays falling 57-43. The Stingrays' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

Several Stingrays players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Lexann Maldonado, who dropped a double-double on 13 boards and ten blocks. Maldonado has become a key player for Cross: the team is 12-5 when she posts at least three blocks, but 2-5 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryan Mayers, who posted 12 points.

John Paul II found their leader in sophomore Lauren Majorkiewicz, who went 7 for 16 en route to 22 points and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Majorkiewicz has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Camryn Michael, who put up five points and nine rebounds.

Cross' loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-10. As for John Paul II, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 16-4.

Cross and John Paul II should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps South Carolina Rankings. Cross will challenge Holly Hill Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday up 155 places (104 vs. 259). Cross is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road. Meanwhile, John Paul II (ranked 46th) will meet Hilton Head Christian Academy (ranked 164th) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
