Baseball Game Preview: Pine Island Panthers vs. Byron Bears

The Pine Island Panthers are taking a road trip to face off against the Byron Bears at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Pine Island will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.

It was a proper cat-fight when Pine Island duked it out with Stewartville on Tuesday. The Panthers came out on top against the Tigers by a score of 10-6. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Landon Lowrie made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (two). He was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jaxon Hartzell, who went a perfect 5-for-5 with one home run, four runs, and two RBI. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. Marshall Skierka also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Pine Island was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .382. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Byron was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a 6-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of Pine Island. That's two games in a row now that the Bears have lost by exactly three runs.

Pine Island now has a winning record of 10-9. As for Byron, their loss dropped their record down to 6-8.

Pine Island was able to grind out a solid victory over Byron in their previous meeting on Thursday, winning 6-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
