Basketball Recap: Menendez Falls Despite Big Games from Nykia Deans and Sophia Scibelli

If Menendez was riding high fresh off their 63-30 takedown of Palatka last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Menendez Falcons took a 33-25 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Ponte Vedra Sharks on Wednesday. The Falcons have struggled against the Sharks recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.

Sophia Scibelli and Nykia Deans certainly did their best on Wednesday to avoid the loss. Scibelli posted 15 points and seven rebounds, while Deans scored four points and six boards. That was a full 60% of Menendez's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

Menendez's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-8. As for Ponte Vedra, the victory got them back to even at 11-11.

Both are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. It'll be a Battle of the Birds when the Menendez Falcons face off against the Paxon School For Advanced Studies Golden Eagles on Monday. As for Ponte Vedra, they will square off against ED White at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. ED White will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Ponte Vedra surely won't give up without a fight.
