Football Recap: Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds vs. Las Animas Trojans
Sangre de Cristo couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They came up short against the Las Animas Trojans on Friday, falling 49-24. The Thunderbirds were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Trojans apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in September of 2019.
Orion Martinez went supernova for Las Animas, rushing for 243 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.1 yards per carry, and also picking up 56 receiving yards and a touchdown. Martinez got the majority of those yards when he pulled down a pass and and took off for a gain of56 yards. Another player making a difference was Braydon Ortiz, who rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sangre de Cristo will welcome Soroco at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Las Animas, they will look to take advantage of their home-field for the first time this season as they take on Walsenburg at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given how much these teams ran up and down the field in their prior games.
