Austin rivals square off in a rematch of last season's Class 6A state championship game and a pair of unbeatens in West Brook and The Woodlands battle as the Lone Star state action heats up.



1. Westlake (Austin) 5-1 at Lake Travis (Austin) 4-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
These rivals navigated their way to Class 6A state championship games last year, Westlake in DI and Lake Travis in DII. Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger, a Texas commit, made his return from injury last week after missing four games and threw four touchdowns. Lake Travis quarterback Charlie Brewer, an SMU pledge, has passed for 1,180 yards and 12 touchdowns. Lake Travis, a 35-14 winner on the road in last year's match-up for its eighth straight victory in the series, is 1-0 in District 25-6A play. Westlake is 2-0.

2. West Brook (Beaumont) 6-0 at The Woodlands (5-0), 7:30 p.m. Friday.
With quarterback Eric Schmid, the son of The Woodlands head coach Mark Schmid, leading the way, the Highlanders have scored 105 points in the last two games. For West Brook, junior quarterback Marcus Johnson has thrown for eight scores and Joel Denley has rushed for eight. Both teams are 1-0 in District 12-6A and Friday's winner will be positioned for a run to the title.

3. Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City) 5-0 at Manvel 5-0, 7 p.m. Friday.
Marshall and Manvel enter the District 23-5A showdown with 2-0 records in league play. Sophomore Antonio Brooks leads a potent Marshall running attack with 547 yards and eight touchdowns. For the Mavericks, junior quarterback Kason Martin has passed for 1,170 yards and 13 touchdowns.

4. Bowie (El Paso) 5-0 at Chapin (El Paso) 5-0, 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Last year, Chapin breezed to a 59-6 laugher over Bowie. But Bowie head coach Robert Padilla and company have been gutting out close victories so far. Chapin has wrapped up most of its wins by comfortable margins. Both teams are 2-0 in District 1-5A

5. Port Neches-Groves (Port Neches) 5-0 at Vidor 5-1, 7 p.m. Friday.
None of the five Port Neches-Groves opponents have played the Indians closer that 20 points so far. Vidor, after being routed by Barbers Hill in its opener, has strung together five consecutive wins. Port Neches-Groves is 3-0 in District 22-5A play and Vidor is 4-0.



6. Fort Bend Ridge Point (Missouri City) 5-0 at Fort Bend Travis (Richmond) 4-1, 6 p.m. Saturday.
Junior quarterback Amryn Jeffrey has been very productive so far for Travis with 1,743 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. With an eye to limiting Jeffrey's pocket time, the Ridge Point defense will look to add to its season sack total of 12. Chad Bailey and Miles Sauls are sack co-leaders with three. Both teams have started 2-0 in District 23-5.

7. Crockett 5-0 at Newton 5-0, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Two powerhouse teams collide in a District 10-3A DII opener. Crockett pinned hopes for a big season on the return of wide receiver Lucky Daniels, who accumulated over 1,200 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Sophomores Darwin Barlow and Tamauzia Brown have combined for 615 rushing yards and nine touchdowns to lead Newton. Newton won last year's contest, 38-35.

8. United (Laredo) 4-1 at United South (Laredo) 4-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday.
United quarterback David Sanchez has already gone over 1,000 passing yards with nine touchdown throws. United South running back Jesus Posada has gained 604 yards and scored four touchdowns in four games. Both teams are 2-0 in 29-6A.

9. North Shore (Houston) 4-1 at Atascocita (Humble) 4-0, 7 p.m. Friday.
Senior quarterback Daveon Boyd leads Atascocita in passing and rushing yardage. North Shore, the defending Class 6A-DI state champion, counters with do-it-all senior quarterback Bryant Badie, a Louisiana-Monroe pledge. Both teams are 2-0 in District 21-6A.

10. Clear Springs (League City) 4-1 at Dickinson 5-0, 7 p.m. Friday.
Getting it done for Clear Springs is Memphis pledge Will McBride (965 passing yards, 10 touchdowns) and Todd Hudson (559 rushing yards). Dickinson's defense has not allowed more than 16 points in any of its five victories. Both teams are 2-0 in District 24-6A. Dickinson won last year's encounter, 28-17.
