West Valley extended their winning streak to four on Tuesday, bumping their season record up to 4-5 in the process. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Monroe Catholic Rams 9-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolf Pack have posted since May 23, 2024.
Jacquilyn Haberstumpf made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off 11 hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, West Valley let Riley Anthony and Ellie Poulsen run wild. Anthony got on base in all three of her plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs, while Poulsen got on base in two of her three plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases Poulsen has posted since back in May of 2024. Madison Inderrieden also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
As for Monroe Catholic, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-3 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games.
On Monroe Catholic's side, Anya Chernich was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off four hits. Chernich was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Leyton Cortez was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Francesca Yanish, who went 2-for-3 with one triple and one double.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. West Valley will host Delta at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Monroe Catholic, they will welcome North Pole at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
