Softball Recap: Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Takes a Loss

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill had lost 12 straight at home dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 1-6 to make it 13. They lost 12-0 to the Rome Free Academy Black Knights. Having soared to a lofty 14 runs in the game before, the Red Devils' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

As for Rome Free Academy, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 9-4. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by 12 runs or more this season.

For Rome Free Academy's part, Madison Safin made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. Safin has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.

In other pitching news, Emelia Szymanski looked comfortable as she pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Kenidee Campbell, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, four runs, and one double. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Alexa Thompson was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill will challenge Canastota at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Rome Free Academy, they will face off against Liverpool at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
