Baseball Recap: Tempe Takes a Loss

Tempe extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 3-13 in the process. They lost 14-1 to the Yuma Criminals. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Criminals this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 22-0 on Monday.

As for Yuma, they are on a roll lately: they've won 15 of their last 16 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-5-1 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 13 contests by seven runs or more this season.

For Yuma's part, Ethen Schmidgall looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk).

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jaime Ruelas, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Andres Ortiz, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Tempe will welcome Browne at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bruins' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Buffaloes' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Yuma, they will host Desert Sunrise at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. The Criminals are on a 15-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), the Golden Hawks a four-game streak of away wins, meaning someone's leaving a streak behind.
