Recap: Liberty Lions vs. Sunrise Mountain Mustangs
The Liberty Lions suffered their biggest loss since December 15, 2023 on Friday. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 70-46 walloping at the hands of Sunrise Mountain. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Liberty in their matchups with Sunrise Mountain: they've now lost six in a row.
Liberty lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Makenna Johnson, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. That's the first time this season that Johnson pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kallee Hilt, who scored ten points along with two steals.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Sunrise Mountain to victory, but perhaps none more so than Savanna Dotray, who scored 22 points. Another player making a difference was Addison Wiemann, who scored 16 points.
Liberty has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Sunrise Mountain, they have been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Liberty will take on O'Connor at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. O'Connor is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 62.8 points per game. As for Sunrise Mountain, they will head out on the road to face off against Apollo at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Apollo will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 180th, while Sunrise Mountain is ranked 30th).
