Baseball Recap: Mountain Crest Gets the Win

Mountain Crest hadn't done well against Bountiful recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Mountain Crest won by a run and slipped past Bountiful 3-2. This was payback for the Mustangs, who suffered a 5-3 loss the last time these two teams met.

Kayden Cullimore spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Mountain Crest let Ethan Nielsen and Brok Buttars run wild. Nielsen scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Buttars scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Those three hits gave Buttars a new career-high. Mason Smith was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.

Mountain Crest hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in three consecutive contests.

Mountain Crest is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.2 runs over those games. This is the second loss in a row for Bountiful and nudges their season record down to 1-5.

Looking ahead, Mountain Crest is taking a road trip to challenge Bear River at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Bountiful, they will be playing at home against Weber at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Bountiful is facing Weber at the right time seeing as Weber is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
