Softball Game Preview: Arcata Tigers vs. Biggs Wolverines

The Arcata Tigers will take on the Biggs Wolverines in a tournament on Saturday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

While Arcata's victory against Ferndale wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Arcata had just enough and edged out Ferndale 8-7 on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Tigers have posted since April 2, 2024.

Meanwhile, Biggs made easy work of Hoopa Valley on Friday and carried off an 8-1 victory. Considering the Wolverines have won five contests by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Gracie Sheppard made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Biggs let Allie Little and Arden Vines run wild. Little went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base, while Vines went 1-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. Vines has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times she's played. Daisy Seipert was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-2.

Biggs hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most three strikeouts in seven consecutive games.

Biggs has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-2-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games. Arcata's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2.
