Football Recap: Nixon-Smiley's Undefeated Season over After Five Games

Nixon-Smiley lost against Poth back in October of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Mustangs received a blow as they fell 32-14 to the Pirates. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 779th, while the Pirates are ranked 328th).

Although Nixon-Smiley took the loss, they still got scores from Henry Benavediz and Joe White.

Poth's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Payton Helford, who rushed for 116 yards and three TDs, and also picked up 38 receiving yards and one touchdown. Major Luna was another key passer, throwing for 273 yards and one touchdown while picking up 11.4 yards per attempt.

Having lost for the first time this season, Nixon-Smiley fell to 4-1. As for Poth, the victory made it two in a row for them and also bumps their season record up to 4-1.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Nixon-Smiley will face off against rival Natalia at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Poth is set to challenge their familiar foe Cotulla at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
