Baseball Recap: Marshall Takes a Loss

After a string of three wins, Marshall's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell just short of the La Canada Spartans by a score of 2-1. The match marked the Eagles' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Caleb Thatcher put in work while hitting and pitching. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

In other pitching news, Marshall got a good showing from Michael Gerst, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Gerst has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.

Marshall's defeat dropped their record down to 5-2-1. As for La Canada, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season.

Marshall is packing up and heading out on the road for their first away game of the season: they will square off against Mountain View at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Mountain View has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.4 runs per game on average), something Marshall will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for La Canada, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Oak Park at 3:30 p.m. La Canada's pitchers better be ready for this one: Oak Park has averaged an impressive 6.1 runs per game this season.
