Picayune had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 18.8 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They came within four points of losing the streak, but they secured a 35-31 W against the Gautier Gators. Given the Maroon Tide's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi football rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Gators are ranked 114th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Colt Robertson threw for 97 yards and one touchdown on only five passes. Jordan Hathorne was his top target, picking up 97 receiving yards and one TD. On the ground, Xavier Dennis rushed for 260 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 10.0 yards per carry.
Gautier's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Keon McNeil, who threw for 248 yards and three TDs, and also punched in one rushing score. Latrell Pogue helped McNeil out on the ground, rushing for 102 yards and one touchdown on only 13 carries.
Picayune's win bumped their record up to 8-1. As for Gautier, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-6.
We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Picayune will challenge rival Pearl River Central at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 1,023 yards in their previous games. Meanwhile, Gautier is set to square off against their familiar foe Pascagoula at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. That contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Pogue and Amarie Jackson.
