Basketball Recap: Lakeland Takes a Loss

After flying high against Bethany Christian last Saturday, Lakeland came back down to earth. The Lakeland Lakers were just a bucket shy of victory on Tuesday and fell 52-51 to the Westview Warriors. The Lakers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Warriors apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January.

Lakeland's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cara Schackow, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine boards. Schackow continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Dulce Canedo, who went 6 of 14 en route to 19 points.

Even though they lost, Lakeland smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive matches.

Westview's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was JJ Whetstone, who posted 14 points and seven rebounds. The dominant performance gave Whetstone a new career-high in boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Bre Cory, who put up 12 points.

Lakeland dropped their record down to 3-8 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Westview, they now have a winning record of 7-6.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lakeland and Angola will compete for holiday cheer at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Westview will take on Fremont in a holiday battle at at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Fremont will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Westview surely won't give up without a fight.
