Basketball Recap: Penasco Sets Scoring Season-High Against Mccurdy

Penasco scored the most points they've had this season on Thursday, but it wasn't enough. They fell just short of the McCurdy Bobcats by a score of 60-58. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Saturday (57), the Panthers still had to take the loss.

Despite the loss, Penasco still got an impressive performance from Rochelle Lopez, who posted 29 points along with five boards and four steals. Those 29 points gave Lopez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Atencio, who had eight points in addition to seven rebounds and six assists.

Leading McCurdy to victory were Kaylee Martinez and Amy Anaya. Martinez scored 19 points, while Anaya went 7-for-13 to rack up 19 points and five steals. Anaya is becoming a predictor of McCurdy's success: when she posts at least five steals the team is 11-2 (and 3-7 when she doesn't). Alyanna Chavez was another key player, putting up seven points along with five boards and three steals.

Penasco has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-13 record this season. McCurdy has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-9 record this season.

Penasco has already played their next match, a 62-19 victory against Escalante on the 15th. As for McCurdy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 52-25 win against Mora on the 15th.
