Baseball Game Preview: Desert Edge Scorpions vs. Copper Canyon Aztecs

The Desert Edge Scorpions will take on the Copper Canyon Aztecs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The last three games Desert Edge has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

On Tuesday, Desert Edge didn't have quite enough to beat Mountain Pointe and fell 7-6. That's two games in a row now that the Scorpions have lost by just one run.

Desert Edge saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Rene Ruiz, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and one double. Christian Waldera also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Meanwhile, Copper Canyon entered their tilt with Glendale on Thursday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 14-4 margin over the Cardinals. The Aztecs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine contests by eight runs or more this season.

Copper Canyon got a massive performance out of Jesus Vega, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, four RBI, and one run. Those three doubles gave Vega a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Emmanuel Manjarrez Beltran, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Copper Canyon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .526 or higher in three consecutive matchups.

Copper Canyon's victory bumped their record up to 12-6-1. As for Desert Edge, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season.

Everything went Desert Edge's way against Copper Canyon in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, as Desert Edge made off with a 12-5 win. Do the Scorpions have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Aztecs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
