Preview: Hurricane Redskins vs. Parkersburg Big Reds
Hurricane is on a seven-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Parkersburg is on a seven-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. The Hurricane Redskins will take on the Parkersburg Big Reds at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hurricane and Parkersburg are at an even 3-3 over their past six head-to-heads.
Last Friday, Hurricane faced Huntington in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Hurricane was the victim of a rough 28-6 defeat at the hands of Huntington. The low total for Hurricane limited their streak of high-flying scores to six in a row.
Despite the loss, Hurricane had strong showings from Noah Vellaithambi, who rushed for 206 yards, and Jacqai Long, who rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown. Vellaithambi is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last five games he's played.
Meanwhile, Parkersburg put the finishing touches on their fifth blowout victory of the season on Friday. They took their contest on the road with ease, bagging a 41-10 win over Musselman.
Parkersburg's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Anthony Ice, who picked up 65 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Another player making a difference was David Parsons, who threw for 173 yards and three touchdowns.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Musselman to a paltry 111 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Parkersburg's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out four times before it was all said and done. Jason Williams was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.
Huntington's win bumped their season record to 9-1 while Hurricane's defeat dropped theirs to 8-2.
Keep an eye on the end zone in Friday's game as Hurricane and Parkersburg haven't had much trouble getting there this season. Hurricane commands a daunting offense this season, having averaged 7.4 touchdowns per game. However, it's not like Parkersburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.2 per game. With these two high-octane teams facing off on Friday, fans should be in for an exciting offensive matchup. Come back here after the game to get analysis of the match and other football content.
Hurricane beat Parkersburg 42-30 in their previous meeting back in October of 2021. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Parkersburg's Bryson Singer, who rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns, and also picked up 44 receiving yards. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for Hurricane to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
