Baseball Recap: Mallard Creek Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for Mallard Creek, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Wednesday. Everything went their way against the West Charlotte Lions on Friday as the Mallard Creek Mavericks made off with a 19-2 win. With that victory, the Mavericks brought their scoring average up to 7.1 runs per game.

Colin McCartney was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That home run marked the first that he launched this season.

In other batting news, Lenton Williams was a standout: he went 1-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Mallard Creek's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 0-4 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of JeHue Alston, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Mallard Creek kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Charlotte only managed five hits.

Mallard Creek picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 2-5. As for West Charlotte, they are on a 12-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mallard Creek will challenge Hopewell at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mallard Creek is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season. As for West Charlotte, they will face off against West Mecklenburg at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
