Baseball Recap: West Lafayette Comes Up Short

West Lafayette had lost four straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 9-11 to make it five. They fell just short of the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos by a score of 5-4. The Red Devils were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bronchos apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Ben Werth put in work no matter where he played. He tossed 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. He is becoming a predictor of West Lafayette's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 3-1 (and 6-10 when he doesn't).

Werth wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Joe Doty, who went 1-for-3 with one run.

As for Lafayette Jefferson, their victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 17-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted against West Lafayette since May 16, 2018.

Like West Lafayette, Lafayette Jefferson also got a great game from a two-way player: Leyton Corbin. On the mound, he tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Corbin has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

West Lafayette will head out to challenge Merrillville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Lafayette Jefferson, they will take on Richmond at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
