Not much got past Jonathan Zylstra, who gave up just two hits and racked up seven Ks to keep Tucumcari off the board. Zylstra also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Rehoboth Christian is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 8-11 otherwise.
At the plate, Trajen West was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Rehoboth Christian's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 7-1 (and 5-10 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Kodah Chapman, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
Hozho Academy came out on top against Jemez Valley last Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run fourth inning. The Wolves put the hurt on the Warrior with a sharp 12-2 victory. The Wolves are also no stranger to big wins: their blowout was the 13th matchup they've won by 6+ runs this season.
Cody Dooley and Philip Elkins made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Dooley pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Elkins pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. At the plate, Dooley went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Elkins went 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Epraim Otero, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple was his first of the season. Trey Tafoya was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Hozho Academy pushed their record up to 20-4 with the win, which was their ninth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Rehoboth Christian, they now have a winning record of 12-11.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Rehoboth Christian has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .433. However, it's not like Hozho Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .492. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
