Softball Recap: Rio Grande Takes a Loss

Rio Grande had lost six straight at home, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 8-15 to make it seven. They fell just short of the Albuquerque Academy Chargers by a score of 15-13. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Ravens have suffered since March 21st.

Jenessa Purcella led a balanced group of hitters, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Ceanna Sanchez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

As for Albuquerque Academy, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games.

On Albuquerque Academy's side, Melissa Purcella made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Purcella has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Albuquerque Academy got a massive performance out of Brooklynn Dominguez, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and one double. That's the most runs Dominguez has posted since back in April of 2024. Bella Swanson was another key player, going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

Rio Grande has already played their next contest, a 21-6 defeat against Hope Christian on the 28th. As for Albuquerque Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 14-2 win against Bernalillo on the 29th.
