3A Southern recap Oct. 23, 2012
The Classical Academy extended the longest winning streak in 3A Southern this week by beating Sierra, 48-14. The win marks eighth in a row for the the Titans.
The Classical Academy took down the Stallions 48-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jantzen Ryals threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns and ran for six yards in the win.
Kurt Rode threw for 307 yards and five touchdowns. He was 17-28 with two interceptions.
Joey Trese was the best wideout in the league this week as David Bervig's team topped Sierra. Trese tallied four receptions for 152 yards. Alex Willis helped The Classical Academy's passing attack out by catching two balls for 50 yards.
Demtrius Graves was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 181 yards on 28 carries as Harrison defeated Dean Huffman's team. Todd Wall also contributed to the rushing game with 19 yards on the ground.
Anthony Greenway made the biggest impact on defense this week as Pueblo Central topped the Panthers. The defensive lineman recorded one fumble.
Pueblo East's Rode and Felix Mestas have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 3A Southern in both passing and receiving yards. Rode has thrown for 1839 yards this season, while Mestas, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 34 catches for 746 yards. Nikko Valdez from the Wildcats leads the league in rushing with 1047 yards.
Entering into this week's contest against Harrison, Rode is short just 161 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when The Classical Academy takes on Pueblo County. The Titans are currently in first, while the Hornets are in fourth.
Pueblo East made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 4,420 from 5,089. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 53-30 victory over Pueblo County last week.
