Preview: Catoctin Cougars vs. Mountain Ridge Miners
The Catoctin Cougars are on the road again on Wednesday and plays the Mountain Ridge Miners at 7:00 p.m. on February 14th. Hopefully Catoctin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Friday.
Last Friday, Catoctin beat Middletown 48-38. Given Catoctin's advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 29th, while Middletown is ranked 89th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Catoctin's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kelsey Troxell led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 11 rebounds. Troxell is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for four games straight. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Smith, who scored 11 points along with seven assists and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Mountain Ridge entered their tilt with Southern with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Mountain Ridge came out on top against Southern by a score of 50-40 on Monday.
Catoctin is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 17-2 record this season. As for Mountain Ridge, their win was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 18-3.
Catoctin beat Mountain Ridge 52-44 in their previous meeting back in December of 2019. Will Catoctin repeat their success, or does Mountain Ridge have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
